Spending a Long Weekend in Houston, TX

Romeo and Yen

We recently had a chance to spend a long weekend (4 days was plenty!) in Houston, TX and so I thought I’d just write a little blog about our experiences there. Because there were 6 of us, we got a little rental (VRBO) a little bit outside of downtown Houston. It was a small place but very clean and modern.

Overall, I think we had a good experience in Houston – I doubt we’ll go back again anytime soon but it was still fun! First, there were a ton of Vietnamese restaurants (which is always a plus in my book!) and of course Romeo got to eat delicious barbecue.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a lot of photos, but I did a TINY bit of vlogging if anyone wants to see (mostly hear my chuckling): jump to the vlog!

Crawfish Cafe – 3/5 – Our first stop after landing in Houston was of course for some crawfish; however, it wasn’t quite there for me. It’s conveniently located inside the Hong Kong City Mall plaza so at least we had a lot of other things available to us.
Alpha Bakery & Deli – 3/5 – Okay, we walked by this little bánh mì shop in the plaza and just from their display – we had to try it! We were pretty stuffed at this point so we just got one to try, it was okay; not great – I think it looked way better than it tasted but bánh mì is always a great option for a quick/easy meal.

Pha Lau Houston – 1/5 – This place was definitely not it. I don’t often complain about food but this place didn’t have anything I liked. Phá Lấu didn’t taste like phá lấu, the seafood was sautéed in weird mixture of sauces. Quite a disappointment.
Daiso
The Pit Room – 3/5 – To be fair, we came here late and they barely had anything left – so what we did have was the end of the day food so it was kinda dry and just not up to par. I had really high hopes for this place. Maybe try going early so you can get fresh food and you’ll have a better experience than we did!

Luce Coffee Roasters – 4/5 – This place was really cute and had really cute drinks. I got the Black Cloud and it was very instagram worthy. At first it taste good, but I didn’t enjoy the aftertaste or texture much- but still, I would go back here simply because it was super cute!

Pinkerton’s Barbecue – 4/5 – Mostly because I’m not a meat eater and when I eat meat, I don’t like a lot of fat – that being said, this place really deserves a 5/5 because everything was really good and “juicy” (for me juicy equates to fatty). Everyone I was with who enjoyed meat really enjoyed this place though!
Waterwall Park – One of the few touristy places we went – it was fun. Good way to spend 30 minutes – 1 hour in between eating.

Kim Son Buffet – 3/5 – This was another place I was really looking forward to, I mean a Vietnamese Buffet?! At first, I was super excited- then I was like, it’s probably not good so I’m not gonna go. But then FOMO – when will we visit Houston again?, so we went … and as I thought, this is one of the places I should just keep on my bucket list and never actually tick it off – it was quite a disappointment. I mean, I can’t really expect much from a buffet I guess.

LA Crawfish – 5/5 – We probably went to a different location than the one I linked but we did try 2 locations and both were pretty good! We got this the night before we flew out and it was so good we went back for more before our flight! This really made our trip to Houston worthwhile.

Dave’s Hot Chicken – 4.5/5 – Get yourself a sandwich! This is highly recommended but highly missed. 🙂 It’s hot and juice and spicy and just hits all the right spots after a long day.
